February Break Vacation Programs

February Vacation Camp (3 yrs. through 5th Grade) @ Darien YMCA
February 18th-22nd

The Holly Pond Vacation Camp Program is designed for school breaks and holidays. Attendees enjoy their time off by swimming, creating arts & crafts, playing in the gym, and participating in field trips and special events. Registration begins 4 weeks prior to the start of each program. A minimum of 4 participants per group are needed to run the program.

Hours:
9 am – 1 pm: 1/2 day Pre-school Only
9 am – 4 pm: Full day Pre-school through 5th Grade
8 am – 9 am and/or 4 pm – 6 pm: Extended Care

Rates:
1/2 day:
$60 per day/Members, $70 per day/Non-Members
Full Day:
$80 per day/Members, $90 per day/Non-Members
Extended Care:
$10 per hour

The Art Museum (Ages: 5-8)

One Session· February 15

The Studio Exploration will include exploration and personal visual documentation of the exhibition in the Silvermine Gallery. Children will re-explore their collection of documentation in the making of art using a variety of materials. The school will provide all materials. Students should bring a light nut-free snack.

Imagination and the Landscape: Painting on Artist Board or Canvas (Ages: 9-12)

One Session· February 15

Children will develop and learn new skills in their exploration of the landscape. Exploration of artist materials, techniques, and ways of “approaching” a workable surface will be encouraged while maintaining confidence with one’s own personal repertoire. Artwork will be introduced by landscape artists. Materials may include tempura paint, watercolor, and soft oil pastel, shiny material that sparkles, and more. The school will provide all materials. Students should bring a flight nut-free snack.

Exploration of Large Sized Surfaces: Mixed Media Painting and Drawing

Children will develop an understanding of how to begin a study of large sized surface. A chance to explore a variety of materials and techniques in the development of a work of art will include reference to art history. The school will provide all materials. Students should bring a light nut-free snack.

Art Studio Exploration: Painting and Sculpture (Ages: 7-10)

Two Sessions· February 19 & 20

Children will explore art materials and techniques in designing a mixed media sculpture. The school break program may include wood, foam, wire, painting and more. The school will provide all materials. Students should bring a light nut-free snack.

Self-Portrait Mixed Media Painting (Ages: 5-8)

One Session· February 21

Artists will use a variety of materials in learning how to develop the self-portrait. They will study specific facial features and create their own values of pigment while witnessing the properties of materials. There will be techniques and methods demonstrations and exposure to works by well-known artists. The school will provide all materials. Students should bring a light nut-free snack.

Self-Portrait – Study of the Eye (Ages: 9-12)

One Session· February 21

Students will study something so small yet a very complex organ in our body with many working parts. They will learn how to draw the eye in relation to parts that contribute to its function as a way of developing understanding of how an eye “works” in a work of art. Students will use artist pencil, brush, oil pastel, and other materials in their re-exploration of their eyes. This studio study will focus on developing ways of seeing artistic skill and exploring techniques using artist materials. The school will provide all materials. Students should bring a light nut-free snack.

Art History and Clay Design (Ages: 5-8)

One Session· February 22

This exploration will include introduction to pottery in the history of art. Children will make sense of pottery through application of mixed media materials and current themes. The school will provide all materials. Students should bring a light nut-free snack.

Collage Exploration with Painting and Drawing (Ages: 5-9)

One Session· February 22

Children will develop drawing and painting skills in their exploration of art materials on a large surface. They will explore ways of opening up to a larger world of creative possibilities while developing understanding of elements of art and design. This workshop will include materials that are wet and dry, shiny and flat, smooth and other, glowing and not, more. All materials will be supplied. Students should bring a light nut-free snack.

Groundhogs February Vacation Program (Ages 2-6) @ Darien Nature Center
February 19th – 22nd

A copy of your child’s State Youth Camp Health Exam Record (physical) and a Child Enrollment Emergency Medical Care Form must be on file and up to date (exam date must be within a year) in order for your child to participate in the program.

Children ages 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 will enjoy a winter vacation program. Exploring the trails, pond and brook and identifying what happens in the winter months to the landscapes. The children will also be creating nature crafts and enjoying the menagerie of animals in our zoo room.

Children should always come prepared for the weather, Coat & Snow pants, boots, mittens and a hat are required. We will go outside!!!

AGE 3+ (9:30 AM TO 1:30 PM)
Children must be fully toilet trained. Children bring a bag lunch. Please remember we are NUT FREE.

Out of school and looking for some wintry fun in the great outdoors? Come down the hill and join other enthusiastic kids as our expert staff lead a variety of winter-themed adventures throughout the 40-acre expanse of NCNC. Partake in nature games, crafts & activities!

Healthy snack and drink will be provided.

Extend the fun and join us for Lunch Bunch each day from 12pm – 1pm (just bring your own lunch)!

Member: $240/child for all 4 days
Non-Member: $300/child for all 4 days
Optional Lunch Bunch: $100/child for all 4 days

Please note that Vacation Camp will not run with less than 10 children.
