Genius on the Go

Meet Amanda!

Where are you from originally?

I lived in New York City through Elementary school, and Greenwich for Middle and High School

What made you choose Rowayton over other towns in the area? How long have you lived in your town?

We live in Rowayton at the moment, but our house is on the market, so we’ll see where things take us! In most contexts, I talk about Darien and Rowayton interchangeably. They’re in super close proximity to each other, have a ton of overlap in terms of playgroups, preschools, parents organizations, and rec activities, and both generally have the best vibe. In short, we wanted a vibrant, social community, and we feel lucky to have found just that.

How many kids do you have and what are their ages?

3 kids, Rosie age 5.5, Jack age 4.5 and Griffin age 2. And Bear (poor guy), our Dog. I think he’s about 96.

What are your favorite things to do with your kids in general or in town?

Now that Spring is finally here, we love going to Bailey Beach in Rowayton on Friday afternoons- all of our friends end up there and it’s a fun little free-for all! The kids play, the parents catch up and sip wine, we order the kids pizza—  it’s just the best way to get the weekend started. We also love Bayley Beach Sunday concerts which start soon- couldn’t think of a better venue, and a better way to transition to a Monday.

What are your favorite local events and why?

We love Rowayton’s comedy night. It’s super fun to do a BYO potluck style event with friends, and the comics are always awesome.

We also love OPUS’s person to person spring gala. Each year is a different theme, and the women who run the event never disappoint.

Three things in New Canaan or Darien that you can’t live without & What can’t your kids live without?:

My kids are obsessed with the chicken fingers at Sails, so I think they would say that’s their answer.  They are also fortunate to have access to The Rowayton and Darien Libraries, and they do a ton of events (story times, sing-alongs, etc) through them.  Personally, summer nights at Rowayton Seafood are in my top 5. Generally, I can’t live without my friends- not to be cheesy, but I adore them and feel lucky to have them all so close by.

Which are your favorite spots for beauty and pampering?

Very into William and Co right now- love the vibe and the smell in there. For a quick mani pedi (and awesome chair massage), I love Posh.

What’s your favorite restaurant in town for a family date? Night out with friends? Romantic evening? Why?

Night out with friends is Kawa Ni, hands down. I know that’s in Westport, but it’s so close and fun. The ambiance is also very chill- reminds me of one of our favorite spots in NYC. Uncorked in New Canaan is a a favorite date night spot and I love the food. For a quick drinks with friends though, I am very loyal to Sails. It’s very Cheers-esque where everyone actually does know your name (and you know theirs). If you can tell, I like a classic neighborhood feel and Sails delivers that.

What is your favorite kid-friendly recipe?

Monster Muffins! My kids beg for these. But if I can be real for a second, I rarely have time to make these. A bottle of Rao tomato sauce, some ground meat and some pasta is my go-to and I probably make it more than I should.

What are a few of the most recent things you’ve pinned on Pinterest and/or who do you follow on Instagram? Please provide links or tags

I end up doing a lot of a la carte decor consulting for clients because it’s my side passion, so I end up following designers and pinning light fixtures, backsplashes, paint colors, etc.

My favorite design blogs to follow are:

For fashion inspo, I love my friend Chrissy’s blog @inmyclosetblog and my new favorite is @thriftandtell.

What has been the most difficult age with your children to date? What helped you overcome the challenges at that time?

Hardest thing in the world was having a newborn while my oldest was still a little babe herself. Rosie was just over a year old when Jack was born. I had taken a break from work and was at home with both of them. Since then I’ve learned that each age and stage is so different, and it ain’t always pretty but it sure is a fun ride.

Best Mom Advice?

I’ve really tried to teach my kids that they are part of a greater “whole” and not the center of it. I think motherhood can feel burdensome when you carry the weight of everyone’s happiness 24/7- teaching my kids that they are, at least partially, responsible for their own happiness has allowed me the freedom to find my own “thing” and still feel like a decent mom.

What was your career before having children?

I’ve been a licensed realtor for many years, but was not active pre-kids. I worked in Investment Banking at Credit Suisse before making the full time switch to Real Estate.

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world? Please share!

I’m currently working at William Pitt Sotheby’s in Darien CT as a realtor. I’m also coaching 5th grade girls lacrosse for Darien Youth Lacrosse, which I am SO pumped about. I played in college, so I’m thrilled to stay involved with the sport.

One thing people would be surprised to know about you…

I love scotch

What movie will you always stop to watch when you find it on cable?

A  Star is Born because…Bradley Cooper.

Guilty pleasure: Vanderpump Rules (who’s with me?!)

Inspired by: my husband. My job is pretty demanding and I do it full time, which means weekends too. He seems to genuinely enjoy his solo time with the kids, which as we all know isn’t always easy. I love my job, and I’m very grateful to him for manning the fort while I’m out in the fields.
