MEET A MOM: Rajal Young | New Canaan & Darien Moms

Meet Rajal Young, a local mom of three, attorney, entrepreneur and volunteer. After a long stint at Bravo and NBCUniversal, she started her own law firm. She is also active in the community, serving on the board of ACT of Connecticut in Ridgefield. Learn more about Rajal and her family, as well as their long history in Fairfield County.

Do you work and/or volunteer? If yes, please tell us where and what you do.
I started my own law firm and media consulting business after working at Bravo and NBCUniversal for a decade. I work with a celebrity chef, production companies, writers, directors, and actors. I also serve on the board of ACT of Connecticut, an incredible Actors Equity Theatre Company in Ridgefield.

How many kids do you have, and what are their ages?
I have three incredible kids: Sam, 17, Cooper, 14, and Remy, 12.

Where do your children go to school, and how did you pick their school?
Our kids attend St. Luke’s School in New Canaan; Sam is in 11th grade, Cooper is in eighth grade, and Remy is in sixth grade. Our son Sam chose St. Luke’s after spending his elementary and middle school experience at Ridgefield Academy. Sam visited many schools in the area but felt the most at home at SLS.

What about your school makes it right for your family?
St. Luke’s school mission is “an exceptional education that inspires a deep love of learning, a strong moral compass, the commitment to serve, and the confidence to lead.” When our oldest entered St. Luke’s as a freshman, we found that St. Luke’s stood behind their mission with involved and invested faculty with a passion for teaching, unwavering commitment to an honor code, cultivating kindness, as well as community service as a part of the curriculum and ample opportunities for the students to share their ideas and lead. Our two younger children joined the following year, and the school was an excellent fit for all three of them.

When did you move to Ridgefield/Wilton, and what led you to settle there?
My children are the fourth generation of my husband’s family to live in Fairfield County, and we chose Wilton as it is a smaller town with a strong community feel, filled with great people.

What are your favorite family activities in the area?
We love to hike with our dog in the Wilton town forest or Quarry Head or play tennis or pickleball with family and friends.

Name one thing people would be surprised to know about you.
We rented an RV and drove across the country for two months. That time was filled with beautiful scenery, moments in nature, and family time.

I also love cold weather; I grew up in Buffalo and love to ski!

When you need “me time,” what are your favorite ways to escape?
I enjoy walking my dog around our neighborhood and being outdoors; it affords me time to do some meditative walking.

What’s the best advice you’ve received from another mom/dad?
When I was climbing the ranks at NBCUniversal, a senior executive who was also a mother told me that having flexibility when my kids were older would be valuable.  This advice helped me start my entrepreneurial journey and open my own firm in 2015.  I appreciate the time I can carve out of my day to spend a moment with my kids while serving various clients that I can choose in the film and television business.

What is your favorite place around town to:
Have dinner:
Baldanza at the Schoolhouse
Go out for a special occasion: I love Mother’s Day at Rolling Hills; it’s our family tradition.
Spend time together as a family outdoors: Hiking in the Town Forest or playing Pickleball
Grab coffee: Rise! Their doughnuts are great, but their coffee and toasts are my favorite.
Shop for the perfect gift: Signature Style, Classically Cate, Elizabella’s, or 109 Cheese — depending on the recipient!
