MEET AN ARTIST: Antonio Muñoz | New Canaan & Darien Moms

Bringing a “signature joie de vivre” to his work, artist Antonio Muñoz creates bespoke silhouettes of children and pets with a contemporary twist. Each silhouette is a one-of-a-kind piece of art, designed using his clients’ color and style preferences. A former graphic designer who moved to Norwalk three years ago from Ridgefield, he’s originally from Guayaquil, Ecuador. Antonio loves the landscape and “varied natural worlds” of his hometown. Find out more about his process, what inspires him and what he loves to do in the Norwalk area.

What brought you to Norwalk and how long have you lived there?
After 10 years of living in Ridgefield and many changes in my personal life, I was looking for a livelier environment and decided to move to Norwalk almost 3 years ago.

What are your favorite activities in town?
I really enjoy Washington Street in South Norwalk. I love walking there with my Miniature Schnauzer, Sophie, visiting stores and restaurants.

You’re originally from Guayaquil, Ecuador. What do you love most about your hometown?
I love the Ecuadorean landscape, its varied natural worlds – the tropical beaches, the spring-like climate of the Andes, the Amazon jungle, and the Galapagos archipelago.

How did you go from being a graphic designer and textile artist to creating bespoke artwork?
In 2009, following four years of terrible whole-body itching, I was finally diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. After six months of chemotherapy, I was in remission and looking for a new start. I became a board member of the Ridgefield Guild of Artists, where I made many connections with other artists and interior designers. With my passion for interior design and my professional experience as a graphic designer and textile artist, I decided in 2012 to start exploring the possibilities of creating bespoke pieces on plexiglass for interiors, with silhouettes, sophisticated patterns, and color schemes, that would complement any décor.

Tell us about your signature silhouettes and what makes them so special…
Each of my personalized works on plexiglass is a one of a kind. In addition to the allure and playful sophistication of patterns and colors, my work has the sentimental value of personalized silhouettes. Each piece is created to add a pop of joyful color and design to any space.

How would you describe your artistic approach?
Before I start any bespoke project, I spend time talking with my clients about preferences in color palettes and pattern design. In most cases I visit their homes to figure out the dimensions of the pieces, and also to take into account their décor, gathering information and inspiration to create pieces that will complement their homes.

What inspires your artwork?
I find inspiration within the ‘Joie de Vivre.’ I love fashion prints, interior design, abstract art, diversity, travels, historical references, exotic places. Any form of artistic expression. A celebration of all the good humanity has to offer.

What local stores carry your pieces?
Lillian August and Darien Sport Shop.

How do you unwind when you need some “me time?”
I recharge by walking with my beloved Miniature Schnauzer Sophie at various parks. One of our favorites is Winslow park in Westport. Also various beaches in the area, like Compo in Westport, and Jennings in Fairfield.

Any words to live by?
Always honor your emotions, and value your inner knowing and love. From there, let your life unfold with kindness, creativity and enthusiasm.
