Welcome to your Meet a Mom Interview!
Where are you from originally?
I was born and raised in New Canaan.
How long have you lived in New Canaan? How many kids and their age(s)?
I moved back to town in 2012 after living in Manhattan for 8 years. I am a mom of two and stepmom of two. Four girls– ages 1, 2.5, 9 and 17!! It is a wild house but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am a lucky woman and my husband is severely outnumbered!
Favorite things to do with your kids in general or in town?
I love the pop-up-park! I also love to take the kids for walks (sometimes kicking and screaming) at Irwin Park. The farmers’ market during the summer months is amazing (especially the clams, pesto and fruit). My littles love Mead Park, although I’ve been so sad to see how it is being left by other users. It definitely needs an update!
What’s your favorite restaurant in town for a family date? A night out with friends? Why?
My husband and I had our wedding dinner at Elm, so that has always been a special place for us. Family date favorites are Sole and South End. A night out with no kids, I’ll happily go anywhere!
What is your favorite kid-friendly recipe?
My kids love honey chicken! Probably not the healthiest, but it is SO easy. A half a stick of butter heated with third a bottle of honey and drizzled over raw chicken strips and baked at 350* — with a side of crispy roasted broccoli (sprinkled with olive oil and a bit of sea salt)!
What is your local go-to store for children’s clothes? Shoes? Furniture? Yourself?
I have always loved Togs — since I was a teenager living here! Groove has been a fun addition for the kids and Spencer is a big fan of Caren Forbes!
What are your favorite events in New Canaan?
I have always loved the 4th of July in New Canaan. Between the Four on the Fourth running race in the morning and dinner and fireworks at Waveny Park in the evening, it is my favorite day of the year! It always reminds me of just how special our small town is!
What was your career before having children?
Medicine has always been a passion of mine. I began working at New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps when I was 16 years old and attending New Canaan High School. I veered a bit off-course and worked in Private Banking at UBS for 8 years until finding my way back to nursing school in 2011. I was lucky enough to work at Silver Hill Hospital for two years before deciding to stay at home full-time with our girls. I love nursing and look forward to getting back into it when life quiets down a bit!
Anything else you want to add? Feel free to include a business venture, involvement in local organizations, etc.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! www.handler2018.com
My husband is running for Governor of Connecticut! I am so proud of him and I am in awe of his dedication to public service, his knowledge of the issues and his passion to fix the fiscal mess that Connecticut has become.
He is running with the Citizen’s Election Program which is aimed to keep special interest money and influence out of politics. In order to make it to the Republican primary, he needs 2,500 individuals to contribute $100 to his campaign to show he has broad support. Please take a look at his website and consider making a $100 contribution. We need everyone’s support!
