SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: HIGH ROAD PT | New Canaan & Darien Moms

Q&A with Dr. Bridget Twedt of High Road PT in Norwalk

Describe High Road Physical Therapy.
I wanted to break away from the traditional outpatient physical therapy model and redefine the standards of care by holistically addressing individuals’ pain and/or injury through treatment tailored to their unique lifestyles and needs. My goal is to promote lasting positive changes and help overcome obstacles that may be keeping people from doing what they love. My sessions are one-on-one for one hour, I never pass my patients off to an aide or overlap their time with other patients.

How did you get into PT?
I started out pre-med in college because I loved learning about how the body works. However, a summer internship in sports television temporarily reshaped my aspirations, and after college I started a career in the TV world. I traveled around the country attending sports events and conducting interviews, which to say the least, was a really fun gig to have in my 20s! But my original vocation in healthcare beckoned me back, and physical therapy felt like the perfect fit. I have played sports my whole life, and I have a history of five knee surgeries among other sports-related injuries. Because of physical therapy, I’m still running, skiing, doing martial arts, and playing sports with the kids. I worked for seven years at an outpatient clinic in Manhattan, and then opened High Road PT after moving to Norwalk.

How did you come up with the name?
My goal is to help people recover from pain and injury, AND also help them to become stronger and more resilient than before. Much like “the high road” implies quality and integrity, I chose this name because I aim to guide my patients towards feeling their best. It’s important to me to help people to get back on the road doing what they love, but this time on the high road healthy and happy!

How long have you run the business?
I just hit two years in December!

What are the benefits of physical therapy?
Physical therapy can help you to eliminate pain, treat and prevent injuries, avoid medication, and in many cases also avoid surgery. I tell all my patients: Injury happens when load exceeds capacity. If our bodies can’t handle the everyday loads placed on them, that’s when we get injured or feel pain. Physical therapy helps to build the capacities of our bodies so that we can stay healthy and feel awesome.

Services: PT, Rehab, run analysis and coaching
I work with people of all activity levels to address musculoskeletal issues and pain. The key is to figure out the root cause of the issue, so that it doesn’t keep coming back!

One of my passions is running rehab and performance. I offer 3D gait analysis using RunDNA technology, which creates a three-dimensional image of the body while running. It provides tons of data that can be used to figure out why a runner is getting injured, to prevent future injury, and to help people become more efficient runners. We also offer coaching services for runners and triathletes who want professional help in training for their races. I also specialize in vestibular therapy, which is the treatment of dizziness, vertigo, and/or balance issues.

What’s your favorite aspect about being part of the community?
I often see my clients out running in the neighborhood, and it’s really cool to see them feeling good and doing what they love. Sometimes I get to race with my patients at local events, which is a lot of fun and always rewarding to see them succeed!

How can the community best support your business?
Spread the word! Letting others in the community know about their experience at High Road PT is the best way to support what I do. Happy and healthy clients lead to more happy and healthy clients!
