Attention, shoppers…Greenwich Ave has a new spot to grab a quick bite. The Daily Café & Eatery, a new concept from Aux Delices chef and owner Deb Ponzek, just opened at the bottom of the Avenue. With two Greenwich locations (Elm St downtown and Riverside) for Aux Delices, Chef Ponzek decided to start a whole new brand with The Daily. We spoke to her about her brand new venture, how it will compare to Aux Delices, and more.
Congratulations on opening, especially at a time when so many restaurants unfortunately had to close their doors due to COVID.
We had actually planned to open Daily last April, but obviously COVID prevented that from happening. So…a year later, we are finally open!
Amazing. How does the menu compare to Aux Delices?
The menu is completely different from Aux Delices—we wanted to start a whole new brand. We love our offerings at Aux Delices, but after 25 years really wanted to do something different!
How would you describe the new concept?
We consider Daily to be a modern sandwich shop and an all-day cafe serving breakfast, lunch and snacks. Our menu has breakfast offerings such as frittatas, overnight oats, breakfast parfaits. For lunch we have amazing hot and cold sandwiches-many of them vegetarian with bold and bright flavors!
Sounds great. What are some of your go-to dishes?
My favorite sandwich right now is the mushreuben-a take on a classic reuben sandwich, but using mushrooms instead of pastrami! I also particularly love our salmon and mango salad and our harissa chicken salad! For something sweet, we bake amazing cookies and brownies every day, and we offer cafe espresso which is the most delicious espresso gelato!
Greenwich Avenue is such a sought-after location. Why did you choose this particular one?
We think our location on Greenwich Avenue is ideal for our grab-and-go guests. There are so many great restaurants on the lower half of the Ave, and we are lucky to offer something an option that’s quick and delicious! We are the perfect spot to pop into while you are waiting in line at the Apple store, or just getting out of a Soul Cycle class!
